In the past few weeks, Top, Ta, Belle and I worked together on our group project – Impact of farming on the environment. The purpose of this project is not only to understand and learn about the topic, but also to be aware of our own learning. For example, become active, independent and engage learners. When we three were conducting our project, the question of how to organize our own parts, how to relate the knowledge that we already have and research on the topic and lead out the next groups, and how to make our products as successful as possible. For this project communication was extremely significant factor. It was essential to communicate and discuss with the teacher and the group mates regularly, for the information of the teacher was the most useful advice in the process of major project. Overall, I achieved the important factors which also could be described as strengths. One thing that independent learner make me success is that I am able to learn, and identify key activities essential for learning such as listening, remembering, applying previously learned knowledge and using formal strategies like keep track of my learning and monitor my progress. The failure is that we can’t manage our time well. I think that we need a better discipline to ensure that everything is carried out on time and properly. We need to make compromises when we confronted with differences in different schedules and different perspectives on a particular question. We sent emails and met each other during the preparing time. We exchanged our views on our understanding of the study and collaboratively came up with our approaches to do the research and make the product.
In summary of my topic(Pesticide) is that pesticides are chemical compounds that can harm more than just pest. They cause health effects, like some serious illnesses and diseases in humans, from respiratory problems to cancer. Thus, this topic leads to what I have learned in quarter 3. In quarter 3 I have learned lots of subtopics including pesticides that suggest me to research more on pesticides. Bioaccumulation is a slow build up of toxins in a body. Biomagnification is when toxic substances increase in concentration in living organisms as they move up each step of the food chain. The sources that I use, I try to look for the sources are backed up with the evidence, the site is maintained by the organization that I know it is credible outside the internet, has been updated in the past 3 to 6 months and has a .edu as the suffix. ESLOs Strategic Learners : I recognize what is important to know and understand. I can reflect on my learning and how my mistakes help me to improve. Besides, I plan how to learn without wasting time. For example writing a goal for every lesson, and what next class I will do can confirm my plan to be accurate. I use technology to do research and to work. Innovative Thinkers : The project can build on the ideas, explanations, and reasons of others. I can apply what I know to analyze, evaluate, and solve problems. To create this products I need to be creative and original, also using the technology to create high quality products. Articulate Communicators : This project taught me to listen, read, write, and speak for different purposes and using different methods. I can use technology and media to clarify, explain, and state my ideas. I can use the web for research and as a resource. As well as I can connect with students at other schools and do collaborative work with them. Also I learn technology skills while doing these projects. Morally Intelligent Persons : The work log and end product is the best thing that would present my hardworking and caring in this work. I use technology in a good ways like trying to research information or watch some videos to make me understand more on this topic. Altruistic Global Citizens : I show that I am concerns and responsible for the well-being of the project. Leaders for the Future : One thing that I loved about our team is that we work together as one team, and not as an individual. I remembered how we put in a lot of effort to ensure that every member of the team has good content. We gave each other ideas to develop their content. We use technology to solve our problems and do our work together. Moreover, I learnt to listen more to others’ feedback and opinions.

There are lots of impact on farming, for example, pollution, loss of biodiversity, climate change, irrigation, overuse of pesticide and etc. This impact does not only impact on the environment but also economic and social. For example, monoculture is a simple(only one species is grown) agriculture but it can cause diseases, not fertilize the soil, unemployed workers and high price of the products. Poly-culture, where multiple species of plant are grown on the same land, it is more beneficial because it uses natural predator and less fertilizer and water.
This assignment I was assigned to draw four maps at four different times. The first time was before I started to learn to about the topic, as you can see that there is a few basic information that I have already know. The second time is while I am learning about the topic. The third time was after I have learned about the topic. The last time is when we do more research on the topic for our final project. As you can clearly see that each time there are more information added to the paper. ESLOs Strategic Learners : a) Recognize what is important to know and understand b) Reflect on our learning and how our mistakes help us to improve c) Plan how to learn without wasting time d) Use technology to do research and to work Innovative Thinkers : a) Build on the ideas, explanations, and reasons of others b) Apply what we know to analyze, evaluate, and solve problems, c) Be creative and original Articulate Communicators : a) Listen, read, write, and speak for different purposes and using different methods b) Tell what we understand and how we understand to different social groups c) Use technology and media to clarify, explain, and state our ideas During the previous week of class I learned and created the poster about HIPPCO. HIPPCO is an acronym that holds the main factors that can decrease biodiversity.
Habitat Loss - destruction, fragment, degradation Invasive Species - the species that are introduced to a foreign location and has the tendency to spread and cause damage to the environment Population Growth - an increase in the number of people that reside in a country, state, county, or city. Pollution - muddy landscapes, poison soils and waterway, kills plants or animals Climate Change - a long term change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns from decades to million of years. Overfishing - by hunting too much will effects the food chain and disrupts some migration and hibernation My group and I have done the poster on Invasive species. From this project I have learned more about the causes and effects to the environment and how we prevent or solved the problems. In this poster I should add more words so that the audiences would understand more about the information and pictures. The obvious thing that I discovered was the advantage of working as part of a group . I learned that the key to be success is a good teamwork when time and resources are limited. As everyone had their own intention to make our poster look well, many different ideas could be produced to make our work out the best. ESLOs 1.STRATEGIC LEARNERS a) Recognize what is important to know and understand b) Reflect on our learning and how our mistakes help us to improve c) Plan how to learn without wasting time d) Use technology to do research and to work 2. INNOVATIVE THINKERS a) Build on the ideas, explanations, and reasons of others b) Apply what we know to analyze, evaluate, and solve problems, c) Be creative and original d) Use technology to create high quality products 3. LEADERS FOR THE FUTURE a) Build teamwork and leadership to achieve common goals b) Work through our differences and accept group decisions c) Evaluate how well we work together and give one another helpful feedback d) Use technology to solve our problems and do our work together This project is about how to build a model of a structure that can withstand a simulated earthquake without breaking or having the golf ball fall. We build the model using the spaghetti sticks, masking tape and play dough. Strategic learner Firstly I recognize what is important to know and understand like brainstorming with my group a structure that will resisted the simulated earthquake. Then I plan how to make this project without wasting time by drawing out the diagram of our model then start making it. I use technology to do research on how to build a strong structure to prevent from the earthquake. I write the reflect on my learning daily and use mistakes to help me improving on the project. Leaders of the future From this project we need to have teamwork and leadership to achieve goals. Working in group sometime I feel like there are group's differences but I accept everyone decision. Each day in the group we give each other some helpful feedback. I use the technology to solve the problems that we have while building the model. Reflections Day 1: Today I have learned about how to build the strong structure of the spaghetti earthquake challenge by researching and brainstorming with my group members. In the next class I will start building the spaghetti structure. Day 2:Today I have learned about how to build a strong structure. The most challenging about this project is using the spaghetti to make tower because it is very hard to make them higher and stronger for the earthquake testing. In the next class I will finish the spaghetti earthquake challenge. Day 3:Today I had continued my work to finish up the project. The problem that we had is that the structure is not strong enough, but the problem were already have been solve. We have finished our project. Summary
From what I have learned is that the pyramid shape is the the best way to prevent the structure from the earthquake because the triangular shape can cause sway less during an earthquake than the rectangle. In our project it can stay still. The most challenge thing of the project is how to make the structure strong enough to hold the golf ball for 10 second. Our structure is strong enough but it is not as beautiful as I wanted. Next time I will make it look more beautiful and strong enough to hold the golf ball. This information be used in a real-life scenario by building the structure using the steal and made it in a shape of pyramid. I learned about ways that plates tectonic moves. I had heard the term before, but I now know the exact movement of each plates. This oreo lab helps me understand more before I learn. In order to know how different plates move, we can use this experimental method. I learned that there are three basic directions or types of boundary interactions. In some places, two plates move apart from each other; this is called a diverging plate boundary. Elsewhere two plate move together called a converging plate boundary. Finally, plates can also slide past each other horizontally. This is called a transform plate boundary. The challenge in this experiment is that we do the experiment before we learned.
